Tuesday in Natchitoches

It's Tuesday evening.  We're still in Louisiana and headed for Baton Rouge (to see Beth's sister Joan) tomorrow.  But first, a few words to catch up on where we've been and what we've been doing.

During our stay in Farmerville, we were in a state park, right on Lake D'Arbonne.  We had a wonderful site (maybe because the place was almost empty) as you can see from these pictures.

We had our own private dock!  There was also a bobber tree...  Most of the "fruit" had been picked off, but there were one or two left.

Louisiana is known as a sportsman's paradise.  One down side of our location is that we heard gunshots multiple times while we were around the RV.  On Monday, we heard shots before 7 AM!  It was barely light outside!

Before leaving on Monday we had a great visit with more relatives - Barbara, James, and Coleen.  Matthew enjoyed harvesting a bucket full of pecan nuts from their front yard. Cracking them will keep us busy for many evenings!.

Monday afternoon we drove west, to Shreveport.  We passed the Bonnie and Clyde museum without a visit. We might have gone if it were a National Memorial of some sort and Matthew could have gotten his passport stamped.  The Red River runs through Shreveport and apparently it's legal to have gambling, but only on the river.  There are huge hotels on the riverbank and casino boats on the water.  We noticed large billboards offering legal advice for people in bankruptcy.  Any connection there?

We met Beth's cousin Linda and her husband Ed for a nice Louisiana-style dinner.

On Tuesday morning we left for Nachitoches.  This is an historic town, settled in 1714 by the French. There is a very quaint historic area on the Cane River (Lake).  This town used to be on the Red River but the river changed its course.  The locals put a dam south of town and eventually the empty riverbed filled with water and now it's a very long lake!

The original French fort has been reconstructed.

We will visit a plantation tomorrow.

Many people have asked what we do with our time in the evening...  Here's a quick glimpse.   Two laptops in action.  Beth is editing pictures and Matthew is doing a typing game.  This place has wifi, so Bill is updating the blog after everyone else is done with the computers!

  2. Bill & Beth & Matthew - How do you know the gun shots were from sportsmen? A good reason to sleep in!! At least it is warm down there, it is snowing hard in Cleveland. No gun shots in Cleveland today. Uncle Tom
