So long Sedona. Meteor Crater

Sunday evening. Very full day.  We attended worship at Christ Center Wesleyan Church.  I've been a life-long Methodist/United Methodist (started by John Wesley) but have never attended a Wesleyan church.  Pastor Frank Robinson was out front greeting people as we arrived.  They have a praise band (three guys and a woman on piano) that did a variety of contemporary Christian songs, including a Bob Dylan song ("When you gonna wake up") and a Christian version of the up-tempo "I'll take you there" by the Staple Singers.  The congregation was very welcoming.  The children's pastor also came over and chatted with us.  The message was a good mix of practical living issues and theology.  To any of our friends who are considering a visit to Sedona, we really recommend checking out this church!

We drove east from Sedona to Meteor Crater, a privately-owned "natural attraction."  About 50,000 years ago a 150 foot diameter meteor crashed into the desert, making this crater of about 4,000 feet in diameter and a depth of 700 feet.  Although most of the meteor evaporated, it broke into pieces before the impact and we saw one of the remaining pieces.  They do a great job with informtaion about meteors in general.  Fascinating stuff.

The crater is surrounded by a private ranch and we saw some cows (and a very new calf).

We thought this cow was very stylish, with matching ear rings.
Following this, we continued our drive east to Winslow.  Beth had a burning urge to go there because of the Eagles song, "Take it easy" - "I'm standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona..."  Sure enough, there is a statue down town of one of the guys from the band.  It's quite the tourist attraction.

If you want to hear the song, copy the following text and paste it into the address area of a new tab/browser window.

Winslow is on old Route 66 - "America's Highway."  We took a nostalgic drive up and down the streets.  The highway was immortalized in the song "Get your kicks on Route 66."  If you don't know it, copy/paste this link (Nat King Cole).

Here is a version by the Rolling Stones (!).  Caution - this video contains some unsettling images of Keith Richards.

We had dinner in the historic La Posada, which was a Fred Harvey hotel.  There was a display in the Arizona Capitol about the "Harvey Girls" and how Fred Harvey set up a chain of hotels and restaurants across the west.  The hotel was built in 1930 (the last and most elegant of his hotels) and closed down in 1957.  It was restored in 1997 and it's a beautiful building and restaurant.
Boy, lots of music references in this post.  We're getting multi-media, a little, maybe.
