Driving the California coast

After leaving Hearst Castle, we continued driving north on US 1 (or as the locals call it, PCH, Pacific Coast Highway).  We came across a group of young elephant seals.  There were maybe a few moms in the group, but at this time of year the males had left for their normal migration.  The seals are not especially lively during the day, mostly sleeping.
Occasionally they will flip some sand onto their backs.

We got a kick out of these three - putting their heads together.
Continuing our drive north, we saw just breathtakingly beautiful scenes.  There were also some breathtakingly scary (for Beth) hair pin turns with 500 foot or more steep cliffs down to the rocks and the surf.

By the way, we were doing this in the Jeep, not the RV!  We also encountered some thick fog along the way.

We stopped at a state park with a spectacular waterfall.  This is what it's supposed to look like (the sunny day view).
This is what we actually saw (the foggy day view).
Plus we have the picture proving we were there...  Somewhere it the fog.

Fortunately we drove out of the fog.  At another state park we saw enormous Redwood trees.

We continued our drive up the coast toward Monterey.  The area south of Monterey is know as Big Sur.  Spectacular scenery.

We finished our day by driving through Selinas (a little east of Monterey) and back south to our RV.  Salinas is famous for a number of reasons, but we'll save that for a future post.
